Tau Alpha Alpha was the first chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in the Stockton, California area. Founded in 1980, the Tau Alpha Alpha chapter was initiated by the dedicated efforts of the following brothers:
1. Brother William Childress
2. Brother Roland Hart
3. Brother Ronald Cruikshank
4. Brother Harry Owens
5. Brother Jones Moore
6. Brother Wilfred Moore
7. Brother Archie Gilchrist
These founding members played an instrumental role in the growth and influence of Omega Psi Phi within the region. They actively recruited and mentored young men at the University of the Pacific, fostering a sense of brotherhood and commitment to the fraternity's principles.
As the years progressed, the impact of the Tau Alpha Alpha chapter continued to be felt. However, the chapter name was eventually reassigned to Bakersfield, California. Despite the relocation, the legacy and contributions of the Tau Alpha Alpha chapter's founding members laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Delta Iota Iota Chapter.
The Delta Iota Iota Chapter continues to build on the foundation laid by its predecessors, honoring their dedication and commitment to the fraternity's ideals. The chapter remains actively involved in community service, academic excellence, and the development of strong, principled leaders.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically black college. On the evening of November 17, 1911, Omega Psi Phi was founded inside the Science Building (later renamed Thirkield Hall) at Howard University located in Washington, D.C. The founders were three undergraduates — Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Ernest Everett Just. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “friendship is essential to the soul“, the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto.
Observed each November and is designed to recognize those individuals at the local and international levels who have contributed to community uplift. A High School Essay Contest is to be held in conjunction with Achievement Week.
Every level of the Fraternity, particularly at the chapter level, is asked to play an active role in support of the partnership by actively engaging in the promotion of the Fraternity’s Fatherhood Mentoring initiative.
Chapters facilitate, participate and coordinate activities that promote good health practices. Some of the programs are the Charles Drew Blood Drive and partnership with the American Diabetes Association.
Promotes academic excellence among the undergraduate members. Graduate chapters provide financial assistance to student members and non-members.
Each year the fraternity gives at least $50,000 to historically black college and universities in furtherance of Omega’s commitment to provide philanthropic support.
Chapters participate in activities that will uplift their communities. Some of the activities include: voter registration, Assault on Illiteracy; Habitat for Humanity; mentoring; and participation in fundraisers for charitable organizations.
Every district and chapter of the fraternity is required to maintain a Life Membership at Large in the NAACP. All members of the fraternity are encouraged to join the NAACP.
A concerted effort at the international, district and local levels to retain active brothers and return inactive brothers to full participatory status.
